was inaugurated BY His Excellency Retd. Let. Gen. S.K. Sinha , Governor of
J& K state in the year 2006. The university museum is first of its kind to

AIMS
AND OBJECTIVES
Centre for Studies in Museology and Sheikh
Noor-ud-din Noorani Museum of Heritage has been set up to showcase the rich
pluralistic cultural heritage of the people of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh
regions.
The museum aspires to:
Mission
The mission of the Museum is to serve
as a catalyst for instruction and scholarship in the history / art and culture
of the region by acquiring and conserving works of art and also teaching and
research. It further aims at sensitizing the civil society by conducting
exhibitions, publishing catalogues and special studies, offering lectures,
organizing symposia etc. The working of Museum is closely associated with
students and other faculty of Jammu University, the faculties of other
universities, the curatorial staffs of other museums the world over, and all
interested members of the civil society. It is also intended to make use of the
museum’s collection and resources for scholarly and pedagogical purposes, as
well as for aesthetic pleasure and inspiration, and in training future museum
curators and conservators in the details of museum profession. The mission of
the museum would also be to expose undergraduates to the importance of art in
all cultures; and to encourage the broader understanding of art and its history
among the general public. The endeavor also aims at the teaching, research and
community-oriented activities of the university through visual communication of
important and interesting works of art.
Besides, the museum seeks to develop
into ‘laboratory, ‘or ‘an interpretation centre’ where a community studies it’s
past & present, its environment, its natural and cultural heritage in order
to have a clearer grasp of its own future. The totality of the museum
functioning is not thus, restricted to its own four walls.
This has necessitated a global action
for museums to “step out” and reach the community with the realization that
community has different facets each with its own requirements. The universally
accepted principle of community participation for sustained interest /
development is applicable even to museum field.
Towards this end, museums also approach
“Heritage” in its wider connotation and hence are concerned with its heritage
resources within and outside its precincts.
