A distinctive feature of the contemporary
strategic environment has been the unprecedented and
sheer dynamics of change in the concepts, paradigms,
and complexities of national, regional and global
security. There is new salience and awareness of the
comprehensive nature of the traditional defence-related
threats, but no less importantly, challenges in societal,
political, economic, technological and environmental
dimensions.
In the fast changing and integrated security matrix-involving
both internal and external facets-societal well-being,
stability and socio-economic development are inextricably
intertwined. This makes it imperative that focused
and policy-oriented research on strategic issues,
national security and regional strategic/security
developments be intensively pursued by experts in
a multi-disciplinary work environment and ethos. Such
analysis, of national concerns in relation to geo-strategic
developments in our extended neighbourhood would not
only assist the political leadership in addressing
salient issues in a far more comprehensive manner
and evolving appropriate national strategies, but
also generate the much needed debate within our national
intelligentsia, media, policy-shapers and opinion
makers.
The Center for Strategic and Regional Studies (CSRS)
at University of Jammu (Jammu & Kashmir), India
has been conceived and established keeping in view
the aforesaid imperatives to promote and undertake
focused research on strategic issues, national security
and geo-strategic developments in areas contiguous
to India in a substantive and inclusive manner. The
Center was inaugurated by the Chief Minister of Jammu
and Kashmir on May 26.2002.
To achieve a more effective synergy in its activities
and throughput, CSRS has endeavored to draw upon the
expertise available in the well-developed social sciences
faculties of economics, political science, history
and sociology of the University of Jammu. Besides,
a full-fledged visiting lecturers programme and networking
with other similar Centres/Institutes within the country
and abroad would ensure that CSRS stays abreast of
the rapidly-transforming developments in the chosen
niches of research on security issues.
