Distance Education Programs:-

Achievements :-

1) The Directorate has the distinction of being the first to introduce correspondence/distance education system in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and thereby provide opportunities of higher education through distance mode as a viable alternative to formal system of education.

2) The courses of the Directorate are catering to the educational needs of the students of the remote, rural and inaccessible hilly areas of the Jammu region, as also the students of urban areas who do not find entry or do not pursue education through mainstream education system.

3) B.Ed. course of the Directorate has helped substantially in clearing backlog of untrained teachers serving in the govt. schools of the state.

4) Besides, untrained teachers working in private educational institutions in the state as well as in the neighbouring states who were paid miserably low wages have improved professionally by undergoing B.Ed. training through the DDE.

5) Likewise, M.Ed. course of the Directorate has enabled a large number of students from within and outside the state to enhance their professional skills and qualification. In the current session the Directorate has introduced postgraduate courses in Fisheries, Hindi and Urdu.

6) Overall enrolment of the Directorate has almost gone upto 10,000/- the minimum level of enrolment required for viability of a Correspondence Course Institute or Directorate of Distance Education.

7) From last year, the Directorate is operating from its new building. The DDE has constructed new complex from its own savings. The new complex has enabled the DDE to initiate measures for streamlining its functioning. The DDE has set up study centres one each in the muffasil govt. degree colleges at Rajouri, Doda, Poonch, Bhaderwah and Kathua, Kishtwar and Udhampur. By these study centres, it is reaching the unreached, i.e., socially and economically weaker people of the remote and inaccessible areas of the state. By now, the DDE has converted about 40% of study materials of its courses into self-instructional format.

8) Preparation of self-instructional materials is essential for up gradation of correspondence courses to distance mode of education.

9) Preparations are also under way to adopt multi media instructional pattern for the courses of the DDE. Last year the DDE successfully hosted 9th Annual Conference of the Indian Distance Education Association with the collaboration of Commonwealth of Learning.
