Post Graduate Department of Home Sciences
  1. The Department is soon opening the 'Centre for Early Childhood Development'. Necessary sanctions have already been accorded for its opening. This center will house the Departmental Nursery School and a Documentation Centre. The Diploma in Early Childhood Development (ECD) will be another major activity of this centre
     
  2. The department started a self- sufficient Nursery school and Day Care Centre for University employees (and general public, in case Intake Capacity are vacant) in 1997. U.G.C. sanctioned financial aid of Rs.2 lacs during IX plan period for the development of School infrastructure .The school has now enrolled 40 children and around 10 children are on the the waiting list for this session. It acts as a laboratory for M.Sc. students besides providing contact point for reaching out to the community.
     
  3. The department is actively involved in extension activities and research in the areas related to Women's Studies. Ten Ph.D. studies have been pursued/are being carried on in this stream.
     
  4. The department has good collection of different types of psychological tests. It is providing facilities for Assessment of Psychological testing for children with special needs besides providing informal counselling services.
     
  5. The department is actively involved in Community outreach activities. About 20 extension activities were organised by the department for various target groups including Nursery School teachers, ICDS workers, adolescent girls, women and others. These programmes were organised in collaboration with agencies like WWF, ICDS (Govt. of India), Social welfare department, University departments, Home Science Colleges, Nursery school and various NGO's (Viraj Kala Kendra, Young's India, ASHI, consumers Council etc.). Besides, teachers are invited to deliver extension lectures. About 30 lectures/popular talks were delivered by teachers during the period of reference.
      
  6. Refresher Courses Organised by The DepartmentTwo UGC-sponsored refresher courses were organised by the department in Jammu in collaboration with Academic Staff College Srinagar for College and University teachers from Northern states. The courses were organised in January, 1998 and Feb-March, 2001.
      
  7. Seminars Organised: 
    • A 3-day seminar on preschool education-"Towards Better Understanding of the Preschool Child" from 20th -22nd March, 1998.
    • A seminar-cum-Training prog. On preschool education entitled "Towards Better Understanding of Preschool child from 21-23rd Sept. 2000. 
    • Seminar on "Children in Difficult circumstances" from 18-19th Feb. 2002. 
    • Interactive session on theme 'Schooling in the Early Years of Life' on 10th May, 2003
    • 4-sessions on Schooling in early years from May-June, 2003.
    • 1- day seminar cum interaction programme on the theme "Water the Elixir of Life" on 12th Sept. 2003 in collaboration with WWF- Nature India.
    • Meena Day was celebrated in collaboration with Young's India Social Welfare organization on 23rd Sept. 2003.
    • A 2-day state level seminar on "Role of Voluntary Organization of Jammu and Kashmir in the Development of Women and Children" was organized in collaboration with NIPCCD, New Delhi from 29th-30th Sept. 2004.
  8. Programmes Organised for Industry/Community
    • An Orientation course for ICDS Supervisors organised by Department of Women and Dev. Ministry of HRD in Collaboration with our department in 1998
    • Department Collaborated with Young's India, a social Welfare organsiation in organsiing a two days Orientation course for the Anganwadi workers and school Teachers in January, 2002.
    • A two day programme for Home Science teachers was organised by the department in collaboration with Population Education Research Centre (PERC), University of Jammu. on 11th and 12th Dec. 2001.
    • A 3-day orientation course on ECCE was organised by the department from 10th-12th January, 2002 for the teachers of Tiger Nursery school , Jammu center 
    • Teacher empowerment workshops in March, 2004 attended by Teachers of various schools. 
    • Department conducted 8 days intervention programme related to the research project, Titled- Towards ensuring better Reproductive health for Tribal (Gujjar) Adolescent Girls sponsored by ICSSR, New Delhi.
       
  9. The department is responsible for expansion of this field at the college level and Home science discipline has been introduced at Kathua Degree College.
     
  10. Number of students who have qualified NET/SLET examination till date include.
    NET(UGC) : 09
    NET(ICAR) : 03
    SLET : 06
     
  11. 19 Ph.D's have been awarded till date.
     
  12. Around 60 research paper have been published by the staff, research scholars and students of the department till date
  13. The department participated in 3-day celebration of Jammu Festival organized by State Tourism Department and University of Jammu from 13th-15th April, 2004.
  14. Special classes are being carried out in the department in collaboration with Department of Adult and Continuing Education for Madan Jeet Singh Scholarship Sponsored 'Pre school and Primary Education Course', since August, 2005.
